John voted President

A local doctor has been made president of an organisation to looks after the nation’s sexual health.

Dr John McSorley, a sexual health and HIV consultant at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, is the new President of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH).

John has worked in sexual health for more than 30 years and witnessed huge advances in HIV care and treatment along with improved access to sexual health services. This includes the trust’s role in the introduction of the HPV vaccination which he describes as ‘a game changer.’

However, challenges remain including women experiencing significant problems accessing timely and appropriate sexual health care; an increase in cases of gonorrhoea and syphilis; and the threat of drug resistant microbes.

BASHH represents more than 1,000 sexual health practitioners and associated services across the UK and John’s appointment comes as demand for sexual health services grow, despite savings in public health.

John said: “We still see unnecessary new HIV infections and one is too many as we now have the capacity to eradicate this scourge from our country.

“It is important that we argue for the resources to deliver this and other goals and not let the progress made slip from our grasp.”
