Trust switch to green inhalers

The trust is promoting greater use of ‘green’ inhalers as part of a national drive to reduce the NHS’s carbon footprint.

Northwick Park Hospital currently uses around 300 traditional meter dosed inhalers a month which is twice the number of breath controlled dry powder inhalers (DPIs) that don’t contain greenhouse gases as a propellent.

The latter result in 95 percent fewer carbon emissions compared to metered-dose inhalers.

At present, meter dosed inhalers are estimated to account for 3% of the NHS’s total emissions. Clinical staff will be asked to use DPIs as a default option where clinically appropriate.
