About the inflammatory bowel disease service
Our specialist team look after you for all parts of your IBD care, including:
- care from our doctors and nurses
- prescribe and monitor specialist treatments
- investigations and monitor disease
- any surgical treatment you might need
- psychological and nutritional support
- supporting young people as they transition from childhood to adulthood
- research and education.
Our nursing team are your first point of contact if you require any advice or support about your IBD. Just leave a message on our advice line if you have a query, particularly if you're concerned that you are becoming unwell.
Inflammatory bowel disease clinics
You can find our IBD outpatient clinics on level 1, ACAD at Central Middlesex Hospital. We are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
We have clinics for:
- Adults and children
- Joint medical and surgical review
- Daily fistula review
You can have your blood tests at the clinic but you will need to book an appointment by visiting blood tests at St Marks Hospital or call 020 8235 4200.
At your IBD outpatient appointment
When you come for your outpatient appointment, please expect to be weighed by our outpatient nursing staff, who are also available to asssit you whilst you are in the department.
At your appointment you might see a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or a combination of these specialists. This depends on the reason for your visit. We will:
- review your current symptoms
- physically examine you, if appropriate
- discuss any concerns you might have
- take some blood from you for a blood test, if you need one
- organise investigations if needed to monitor and assess your condition
If you're coming for a follow-up appointment, please make sure any tests or investigations we've arranged are done before your visit. If you're still waiting for tests, you can reschedule your follow-up appointment by calling 020 8235 4051 and choose option 2.

IBD infusion unit

- Open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm

Toilet facilities
Toilet facilities are available within each department. If you need any assistance finding them, just speak with a member of staff.

IBD tests and investigations
Our dedicated intestinal imaging unit is equipped with modern digital screening units and ultrasound scanners. It performs specialised contrast and ultrasound studies including:
- evacuation proctography
- transit studies
- endosonography of the anus and rectum
- pouchography
- sinography
- modified video swallows with the speech therapy department
- barium studies including small bowel enema intubation examinations
- double contrast barium enemas
- transvaginal ultrasound
- CT of the abdomen and pelvis
- MRI of the abdomen, pelvis and anal fistula
- endocoil studies of the anus.

IBD patient panel
Our IBD Patient Panel meet regularly to discuss our care. If you use our service, or are the carer of someone who uses our service, it's a forum for you to offer our team feedback and suggestions for improvements.
If you would like to contribute to the patient panel by either attending the meetings, or by highlighting a particular area you would like to see the panel address, please get in touch with the IBD nurse to join the IBD Patient Panel.

As a hospital specialising in IBD care, we have an active research and clinical trials programme. We may ask you if you're interested in participating in a research project, but you are not under any obligation to take part.
