Dick Bussey

The longevity man

St Mark's Hospital's longest serving staff member was also one of its most unassuming.

HJR 'Dick' Bussey clocked up an extraordinary 60 years' service after joining its ranks as a teenage lab assistant.

He worked closely with pathologist Cuthbert Dukes who was instrumental in setting up the world's first Polyposis Register which monitors and treats successive generations of families carrying a group of cancer carrying genes.

Dick recalled his first job looking after mice used in research.

The lab shared a thin partition wall with an adjoining waiting room and a young Bussey recalled the voices of startled patients after a doctor admonished him saying: “That's the third one you've killed today!”

Dick was later awarded a PhD for his work on polyposis and was recognised as a world authority.
