Online questionnaire that gets you ready for surgery

An online questionnaire that helps up to half of all patients avoid coming into hospital for a pre-operative appointment has allowed a London hospital to almost double its capacity for ensuring patients are fit for surgery.

MyPreOp allows patients to complete an online form with algorithms saving both their and nurses’ time.

It is the brainchild of former anaesthetist Dr Paul Upton whose company Ultramed has been using MyPreOp at Northwick Park Hospital.

Dr Upton noticed how much time was taken up with form-filling and how many hospitals still had paper-based systems which couldn’t automatically process the information or guide nurses on what tests and actions might be needed.

The questionnaire has allowed the hospital trust to increase its pre-operative assessment capacity by 40%.

Dr Upton developed his idea after joining the NHS Innovation Accelerator programme which helps individuals upscale their vision for wider use across the health service.

To date, the programme has supported 85 innovations, of which 60 have now been marketed internationally.

Craig Brown, Head of Elective Transformation Programme at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust added: “It’s been a joy working with Paul and his team and has enabled the trust to deliver a true stepwise transformation in how we provide Pre-Operative Assessments for our local multi-cultural communities.

MyPreOp has also won the Royal stamp of approval after being recognised for innovation at the Kings Award for Enterprise
