Local doctor picks up global award

Lorenzo Patrone has been voted Global Doctor of the Year for his work as a vascular and interventional radiologist at Northwick Park Hospital.

It was presented by The Way To My Heart which represents the largest online community of peripheral artery disease patients in the world.

The online vote took into account the consultant’s online presence and willingness to use social media forums to engage with patients, answer questions and offer ‘remote’ consultations.

It resulted in several patients undergoing successful procedures at the West London Vascular and Interventional Centre which had been considered inoperable elsewhere.

The work of Lorenzo and his colleagues at the West London Vascular and Interventional Centre has featured widely in the media. He is currently creating a patient-friendly section on Vascupedia, a free e-learning platform for vascular medicine.

Lorenzo said: “We can save more legs by raising awareness than by operating in theatre and want to avoid a situation where the disease is so advanced people face partial or major amputation.

“I’m part of a fantastic team at the West London Vascular and Interventional Centre and we’re often mentioned as model of good practice at international congresses.”
