Organ Donation Week (Sept 2-8) encourages people to think ahead and save lives by registering as an organ donor.
At present, more than 6,000 people are waiting for a transplant in the UK and the Government has responded to the demand by introducing new legislation that comes into force in spring 2020.
This means all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups.
One organ donor has the potential to save or transform up to nine lives.
At present, a large number of potential organ transplants are missed because families are not aware of their relatives’ wishes and therefore say no when approached about organ donation.
A recent survey of adults in England for NHS Blood and Transplant found 84% agreed it was important to let those closest to you know your views on organ donation but only 40% had shared their organ donation decision with their family or partner.
You can register your organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and tell your family the choice you have made
