Doctor prescribes walking

A local doctor despairing of rising rates of diabetes and obesity in Harrow has set up a walking group in his spare time.

Dr Nizar Merali, who works at GP Direct surgery in Welbeck Road, personally leads a 45-minute walk around West Harrow Park every Sunday morning.

“I think it is important to lead by example,” says the 70-year-old who has been a GP for more than 40 years, “and I could do with the exercise myself.”

“A lot of people feel going to a gym is a bit daunting and walking is a great alternative. It’s free, easy to fit into your daily routine and you can do it anywhere.”

The Sunday constitutional attracts around 25 walkers and is part of the part of the wider Harrow Health Walks, a programme of free weekly walks.

Anyone is welcome to join regardless of age or fitness and every walk is led by a team leader vetted by Harrow Council.

“We’re out come rain or sun so please come and join us,” said Nizar.
