Amputee rates lowest in UK

A national survey on the prevalence of foot and leg amputations among diabetics has revealed that North West London has the best outcomes in the UK.

Its success is attributed to a closer working relationship between local GPs, community and hospital podiatrists, endocrinologists, radiologists, pharmacists, and the vascular surgical team at Northwick Park Hospital.

The collaboration allows for the rapid identification and referral of high-risk patients for examination and treatment.

Mr Selva Theivacumar, consultant vascular surgeon and clinical director of vascular and endovascular services at London Northwest University Hospital NHS Trust, said: “I’m very proud that we have the lowest amputation rates in the UK, despite Harrow having the highest number of diabetics in the country."

Selva’s team treats up to 400 patients a year using a combination of surgery and interventional radiology to unblock clogged arteries that restrict or even stop blood flow to the lower limbs.

“It’s an extremely painful and debilitating condition that leaves people struggling to walk even short distances without severe pain or suffering from ulcers on their feet or legs.

“This is a great example of primary and secondary care working together for the benefit of the local community.”
