Heart to heart

A community leader in Southall is helping raise awareness of heart disease among the Asian community after suffering four heart attacks himself.

Jaskaran Singh said the community must be more open about heart disease as it affects a disproportionally large number of Asians.

The former newspaper editor and founder of chair of the West London Asian Society ballooned to more than 18 stone before his first heart attack.

realised the value of community support after a bedside visit from Heartlink, a charity which supports heart failure patients in the community.

Jaskaran said: “One of the greatest barriers to recovery is your mental health and a positive attitude makes a huge difference.

“Heartlink show you that you aren’t alone. It can be very isolating but they show you that there is life after a heart attack.”
