Understanding our quality

We use several methods to check that we are offering you high quality care. Some of these involve using your feedback about your care or the care of someone you know, while others involve us looking closely at the information we collect for each of our services.

Together, these methods are known as clinical governance.

Clinical governance helps us to:

  • check that we are providing you with the right care in the right place at the right time
  • manage the risks involved in providing safe clinical care
  • recognise and apologise for any mistakes that we may have made in our care
  • identify improvements we want to make to our care
  • track the effects of changes we’ve made to improve care.

Types of clinical governance

  1. Learning from clinical audit

    We use the information we collect about our care to see how well we’re performing. This process is known as clinical audit.
  2. Learning from mistakes

    Across the NHS, problems sometimes occur while we are looking after you which affect your care. We call these problems incidents, or sometimes, clinical incidents.
  3. Learning from complaints

    If you make a formal complaint about your care, it will be investigated by a senior member of staff who hasn’t been involved in your care.
  4. Learning from deaths

    We think it’s important that we learn as much as we can from deaths which take place in our care.
