Early years (0-5 years)

Communication is a vital part of life and is involved in everything we do, every single day.

Communicating involves a wide range of skills including:

  • interacting with others
  • joining in with games and activities
  • listening to people
  • understanding what people say and how they feel
  • talking about something that has happened
  • sharing ideas, feelings and experiences
  • making friends.

Communication skills are fundamental to a child’s development.

In the first 5 years of life communication skills develop quickly. Therefore if your child is having difficulty with their communication skills it is important that they get help as soon as they can.

Take a look at the communication building blocks below to learn how communication skills develop.
