Paediatric occupational therapy (Brent)

The Brent paediatric occupational therapy service offers a child and family-centred approach to children and young people from 0 -18 years of age who are temporarily, or permanently disabled by physical, learning, sensory, social communication and developmental problems.

We offer comprehensive assessment and individually-tailored treatment sessions including individual and group work and mother and baby group sessions.  We also provide a wide range of programmes and activities to enable the child and their family to develop their skills at home and school.  The occupational therapist will work with the family and nursery/school staff to ensure the home and school environments are suitable for the child's needs by providing advice to minimise risk and referring on to other agencies when appropriate.

The service supports children and young people with difficulties and impairments impacting on their participation in everyday activities, including those with conditions such as:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Developmental delay and Learning disabilities
  • Profound multiple disabilities
  • Sensory processing disorder
  • Developmental co-ordination disorder, e.g. dyspraxia
  • Autistic spectrum disorder
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Juvenile arthritis
  • Upper limb conditions which merit the fabrication of splints and upper limb orthosis.

Occupational therapists work in the context of a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care in which many different professionals work side by side and collaborate in planning, problem solving and co-ordinated service delivery.

All our occupational therapists are registered with the Health Care Professions Council and work to The College of Occupational Therapy professional standards.

Our services are delivered in a range of settings which include:

  • Early years settings, playgroups, nurseries and children's centres
  • Specialist nursery units
  • Home-based intervention
  • Mainstream schools
  • Occupational therapy clinics at the Wembley and Willesden Centres for Health and Care
  • London hospitals with reference to discharge planning
