Videofluoroscopy (A real-time x-ray assessment of swallowing).

SLT led voice clinic
This provides a specialist service to patients with voice disorders. Flexible nasendoscopy and rigid stroboscopy are used to view the larynx (voice box) in order to direct therapy more appropriately and to help patients understand their voice problems better.
Referrals are accepted from GPs, consultants, and speech and language therapists.These can be made by contacting the Speech and Language Therapy Department and Northwick Park Hospital.

Combined voice clinic
This is led by the ENT (ear, nose, throat) consultant surgeon and a specialist speech and language therapist. Flexible nasendoscopy and rigid stroboscopy are used to view the larynx (voice box) in order to diagnose voice problems and direct management.
Referrals can be made directly to the ENT department by GPs, consultants, and speech and language therapists.

Cough reflex testing
This is currently being piloted on the acute stroke ward at Northwick Park Hospital as an adjunct to clinical swallow assessment.The patient’s cough is stimulated and the strength of their cough gives the therapist more information regarding the patient’s ability to react to food and fluids entering the airway. Referrals are accepted from the stroke unit multidisciplinary team.
Surgical voice restoration
This service is available to patients following total laryngectomy. This service includes the below and is based at Northwick Park Hospital:
- insertion and maintenance of surgical voice prostheses
- olfactory rehabilitation
- problem-solving for issues relating to voice production, the voice prosthesis, trans-oesophageal puncture, or stoma.
Fibre-optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
FEES is a real-time endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. This clinic takes place at Northwick Park Hospital and Central Middlesex Hospital. Please contact the relevant Speech and Language Therapy Department.
