Neurology is the medical speciality dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous system. Common neurological disorders include:

  • Headache disorders such as migraine
  • Loss of consciousness eg epilepsy
  • Stroke/TIA
  • Neurodegeneratives disorders such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's disease (and other cognitive disorders), Motor Neuron Diseases
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • And other conditions the GP feels may be neurological

Investigations used in neurology include MRI scans and Neurophysiology.

Treatment of neurological disorders may include medication or surgery (neurology will refer on to neurosurgery if necessary).

Our services

The neurology department is a dedicated multi-disciplinary team that aims to provide an effective, efficient patient focused service. The department provides a range of neurological tests as part of both an inpatient and outpatient service. We have excellent links with the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from Northwick Park Hospital and with Charing Cross Hospital from Central Middlesex Hospital. Patients may be referred to these specialist hospitals if they require more complex investigation or management.

The department has a special interest in neurodegenerative disorders especially Parkinson's, young onset dementias, multiple sclerosis and stroke. The department is closely linked to the Dementia and Neurodegenerative Disease Clinical Research Network for North Thames (NT DeNDRoN) as the Director and the Parkinson’s disease lead are consultants in the department. Patients therefore have excellent access to information about research in these areas and the option to participate if they wish.
