The haematology department provides a consultant-led integrated clinical, diagnostic laboratory and blood transfusion service for London North West Healthcare NHS Trust and primary care from the surrounding areas.

The haematology laboratory works very closely with the clinical haematology service to provide specialist care to patients with disorders of the blood. The Specialist Reference Haemoglobinopathy laboratory at Central Middlesex Hospital provides a specialist and expert service taking requests referred from many parts of the country.

A 24-hour emergency on-call service and consultant advice are available.

The haematology laboratory service is provided in collaboration with The Doctors Laboratory Ltd.

What is haematology?
Haematology is the investigation and diagnosis of disease from the examination and testing of blood and bone marrow. Bone marrow samples are taken with a needle puncture, usually to a hip bone, with local anaesthesia by a trained specialist clinician. Other tests include coagulation screening to test how well blood clots.

Haemoglobinopathy testing determines if patients might have disorders of the haemoglobin molecule, e.g. sickle cell and thalassaemia.
