Big hearted couple win NHS award

Ealing couple Ajit and Veena Saib celebrated being voted Volunteer of the Year at the London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust’s annual Staff Excellence Awards.

Ajit has been volunteering with HeartLink, a support group for people recovering from heart conditions, since 2003. His wife has worked for the group for a decade helping make female patients feel more comfortable.

Ajit said: “I first got involved with the group as a patient when I had a heart bypass and decided to help others in a similar situation. We have a large Asian community in Ealing so speaking four Indian languages comes in handy.

Volunteering isn’t new for the couple who moved to England in the 1960s.

“We spoke English but many didn’t and my wife and I volunteered as interpreters and translators accompanying people on hospital visits and things like that. I’ve always enjoyed helping other people.

“It was wonderful to be recognised after all these years and we were a bit stunned when were announced the winners.”

The Saibs’ volunteer several hours a week at Ealing Hospital.
