From today (1 December), London North West Healthcare NHS Trust officially becomes a University Hospital.
In the summer, the Trust received confirmation that it was successful in its application to become a member of the Association of UK University Hospitals (AUKUH), a key leadership body representing University Hospitals across the UK.
The Trust that runs Northwick Park, Ealing, Central Middlesex hospitals and community services in Harrow, Brent and Ealing will now add the word ‘University’ to its title to become London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.
Chief Executive Dame Jacqueline Docherty said: “Membership of the AUKUH and recognition as a University Hospital by our peers formally acknowledges the important role that we play in training clinicians of the future and bringing the benefits of healthcare innovations to the public.
“A strong, positive signal of this kind will help us considerably in our efforts to strengthen relationships with partners, to build trust with the communities we serve and to recognise the impact of our outstanding clinical workforce within London, nationally and beyond.”
To become a member of the AUKUH, the Trust had to demonstrate strong involvement in research and a commitment to undergraduate teaching. London North West Healthcare works in partnership with Imperial College London to promote discovery and adoption of emerging innovations and best practice in healthcare. Professor David Taube, Visiting Professor in Imperial’s Department of Medicine, was nominated by the College as Non-Executive Director on the Trust’s Board.
Professor Gavin Screaton, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial: “London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust is an active and valued partner for the College. I am pleased to see the Trust’s commitment to embedding evidence-led teaching and innovation at the core of its activities has been recognised through this membership.”
There are currently 47 member Trusts within the AUKUH. The Chief Executives of these Trusts, as well as senior staff such as Directors of Finance, Medical Directors and Research and Development Directors, meet through the Association to take the lead on national issues.
Bob Bell, AUKUH Chair and Chief Executive of Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust, said: “A Trust which supports researchers and educators is one which can drive innovation and set the agenda for UK healthcare. The Association is very proud to have London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust as a member and looks forward to the valuable input it will have at this crucial time for the health service.”
