Colonoscopy is where the specialist uses a thin flexible tube (a colonoscope) with a tiny camera on the end to look inside your bowel. To prepare for this procedure, you will need to avoid certain foods for a few days beforehand and take laxatives to clear your bowel. If you wish to please download the list of foods
From 12noon do not eat any solid food until after your examination but drink plenty of clear fluids. Please follow the instructions for taking the bowel preparation. It is important your follow these instructions carefully as failure to clear the bowel adequately may result in the procedure being cancelled or repeated.
Endoscopy Unit St Mark’s Hospital
St Mark’s endoscopy unit is a World Centre of excellence for lower GI endoscopy. The unit is world renowned, being the only unit in the UK to achieve international recognition as a centre of excellence for endoscopy research and training.
The unit consists of 6 procedure rooms. The unit carries out approximately 25,000 procedures per year. The procedures carried out are varied and include diagnostic and major therapeutic Gastroscopy (OGD), Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, ERCP , Bronchoscopy & Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE). Many of these involve advanced therapeutic techniques, such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic sub-mucosal dissection (ESD), TASER, FLEX, stenting and dilatation.
St. Mark’s Hospital Endoscopy Unit also hosts the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. It was also the first unit in London to be accredited as a Bowel Cancer Screening centre in 2006 and to implement the Bowel Scope Screening programme, delivering the national bowel cancer screening programmes to the local population. The Wolfson Unit has also developed regional and national referral services for polypectomy, video capsule endoscopy and double-balloon enteroscopy, and provides nationally accredited courses for the teaching and training of endoscopists.
Endoscopy Unit ACAD Central Middlesex Hospital
The endoscopy unit consists of 2 procedure rooms within ACAD plus a Fluro-room to perform procedure which need an x-ray facility and an emergency endoscopy room in the X-ray department in the Central Middlesex Hospital. The procedures carried out are varied and include Gastroscopy (OGD), Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, ERCP & Bronchoscopy. The unit also provides recovery facilities. The unit carries out approximately 7000 cases per year.
Endoscopy Unit Ealing Hospital
The endoscopy unit consists of 2 procedure rooms plus the need to provide services outside the unit for bronchoscopy, ERCP, GA and emergencies. The unit also provides recovery facilities. The procedures carried out are varied and include Gastroscopy (OGD), Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, ERCP & Bronchoscopy The unit carries out approximately 7000 cases per year.
