If you are unwell or injured you can go to A&E by yourself or ask a friend, family member or carer to bring you. In an emergency you can telephone 999 or 112 for an ambulance.
You should bring details of any current medication, your GP details, and ensure that you are accompanied by an English speaking friend, relative or carer where possible.
We aim to assess, investigate, diagnose, treat, admit or discharge you within four hours of arrival but sometimes there can be delays depending on the number of patients we are treating and the nature of your condition.
Specialist conditions may require you to be transferred on to another hospital once your condition has been stabilised.
How soon will I be treated?
All A&Es use a priority system where the most seriously unwell patients are seen first. How long you wait to be seen therefore depends on:
- The seriousness of your condition
- How many patients with more serious or urgent needs arrive in the unit whilst you are waiting
- The availability and demand of specialist clinicians.
Who will treat me?
In some cases you will be assessed by more than one clinician and may be asked similar questions to establish an accurate treatment and a plan of care. You may require an x-ray or other tests, whilst we wait for your results we may ask you to sit in a waiting area.
At the end of your consultation, you will be given information on:
- The nature of your condition
- Any further investigations you may require
- Treatment options
- A follow-up plan (if required).
You should be involved in any clinical decision about treatment and your plan of care where possible.
Will I be admitted to a ward?
Depending on the nature of your condition it may be necessary for you to be admitted you for further observation or treatment. If we need further time to complete tests or to monitor your condition, you may be transferred to the Clinical Decisions Unit located near to A&E. If you condition requires an inpatient stay, we’ll transfer you to one of the main hospital wards.
Can you get me home when I’m discharged?
We cannot provide transport home for patients, even if a patient was brought in by ambulance. However, we are happy to help organise a taxi for you.
What happens after I'm discharged?
- Follow the advice given to you by the doctors and nurses. Do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions or concerns
- If you have been given medication, please read the advice leaflet. Some medications have side effects. It takes time for some medications, such as antibiotics, to work. You may continue to feel unwell for up to 48 hours
- If you feel worse, continue to feel unwell or your symptoms change, please contact your GP. We will send your GP details of your visit to our hospital so your GP will be aware of the treatment you received. You should only re-attend A&E if it is an emergency.
