Safe staffing

From April 2014 it became a national requirement for all hospitals to publish information about staffing levels on wards, including the percentage of shifts meeting their agreed staffing levels.  This initiative is part of the NHS response to the Francis reportwhich called for greater openness and transparency in the health service.

Every day the wards monitor the staffing levels and this information is displayed in the wards quality board that is updated daily and the monthly information is fed back to the Chief Nurse.

The Trust's monthly results are available through the NHS Choices website, as well as here on our internet safe staffing page. The results are presented by each ward, it shows the number of nursing and midwifery hours and health care staff hours that we plan to have on duty, and next to this are the actual hours that the clinical staff have worked. The staffing levels are shown in hours by day and night including the monthly average percentage fill rate for each ward.

Some of our wards show that they have more staff on duty than are planned, hence they are showing more than 100% fill rate. This is because we occasionally book additional nursing or healthcare staff to care for patients who need close supervision in cases where patients are confused or acutely ill and need additional nursing care to ensure patient safety and quality care.

Where our wards show under the planned numbers of nursing or care staff, we always take measures to ensure that quality of care and patient safety is not compromised. These measures are described on each monthly staffing return of the wards that is validated by the respective Heads of Nursing/Matrons and further discussed in the monthly report presented to the Trust Board. These include requests for temporary staff cover, moving staff across wards following results of risk assessment and requesting the ward manager, matron, Heads of Nursing and other clinical staff to support the frontline staff.

We regularly review our staffing levels including ward skill mix and below are the results:
