Shaping the future of the NHS with effective leadership course

Leadership course

Staff at London North West Healthcare NHS Trust are taking part in a course in effective leadership, led by Buckinghamshire New University.

The five-month-long programme, led by Bucks Consulting Group, part of Bucks New University, has run since 2014 and has just welcomed its latest cohort at sites including Northwick Park Hospital, in Harrow, Middlesex.

The course aims to build effective teams, manage processes and achieve change, and gain commitment from workers, and is working with staff with leadership potential in clinical, nursing, operations and administrative areas.

Dr Bill Nichols, lead consultant on the programme, said: “The programme is about developing practical skills and competencies to enable staff to build solutions.

“It’s a real pleasure to work with totally committed groups and in an environment where we are making a tangible contribution each and every time.

“Our work complements similar programmes in leadership, service improvement and communications across several NHS trusts. Together, they have given Bucks New University, via Bucks Consulting Group, a serious presence in this field.”

The programme is also supported by Helen Cope, of Bucks New University and areas it teaches include a focus on the modern NHS.

Claire Hynes, Professional Development Nurse at the Trust, said: “Staff who attend the course feel more confident in themselves as leaders.

“They have learnt to delegate more effectively and the course has provided them with a platform to take action from. It has enabled staff to identify more clearly the types of individuals who are in their teams and how to manage them.

“The end of programme Service Improvement Projects have had a positive impact on both staff and patients with the organisation benefitting from the voices and opinions of our staff across the whole of the Trust.”
