Let’s talk diabetes, a free event run by the Brent Integrated Diabetes Service (BIDS), took place at the Brent Civic Centre on Thursday 15 June. The event was a collaboration of NHS, community and voluntary sector organisations, and the local council, working together to help publicise available diabetes support.
Residents from across Brent participated in a series of interactive diabetes topics including advice on foot care, diet and exercise. There were several information stands on a variety of diabetes and other health related services in Brent. This included information on DESMOND, a one day course about type 2 diabetes that is typically attended by around 10 people per session. DESMOND is run by health care professionals who are experienced in diabetes care and management.
Other stands included the North West London Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, information about Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust’s Talking Therapies service and advice from Diabetes UK. There was also an opportunity to meet the BIDS Diabetes Specialist Team.
The Brent Integrated Diabetes Service (BIDS) was launched in October 2014 and strives to deliver high quality specialist diabetes care in the community and closer to the homes of patients. The service offers specialist diabetes clinics across all Brent localities and aims to support 67 GP practices in providing enhanced diabetes care.
